**Story Time**: On September 29, 2013, in the early hours of the morning, I was woken up by a call from my sister-in-law. I'd had a long night so I was not fully awake when I answered the phone but I was having a rough time understanding her. As I sat up to ask her if she could repeat herself, it became clear she was crying. I asked her if she was okay and she repeated her words with greater clarity - her husband, my older brother, was wrapping up patient notes at home on his laptop when he unexpectedly began gasping for air/breathed his last breaths. She attempted to resuscitate him, but was unsuccessful. I asked her if she had called 9-1-1 and she confirmed she had and that the EMTs pronounced my brother dead as soon as they arrived at their Brooklyn home. I will never forget that call and I will never forget the weight I felt placed on my shoulders in having to deliver the news to my parents that their first-born, just three months removed from his 32nd birthday, had passed away.   My parents have definitely picked up the pieces as best they could given the devastatingly shocking way in which we lost my brother. But where I have had the blessing of many rites of life since that date (getting married, getting several promotions at work, having several children) and many distractions (steelbook collecting, shoe collecting, now watch collecting) I can see that, in the quietude of their thoughts, my parents acutely feel the void his passing created.   This past weekend, when we gathered to commemorate my brother's life, we had the blessing of being able to dote on my wife and I's newborn son. It was a joy to see my parents so enamored with their newest grandson and arrested by the beauty of life again. During their visit, my Dad, who has ALWAYS been tremendously selfless and lived a life of relative austerity to provide the best possible life for us, asked me some questions I did not anticipate - "how much does a Rolex cost and how difficult are they to maintain?"   My dad has always been very spendthrift so I was surprised he asked. I asked him which Rolex he was inquiring about, because the model, the materials, even the dial size, would directly inform pricing. We flipped through a catalog of Rolex watches and identified the Datejust with fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet to be what he saw in his mind's eye. I told my Dad I could help him locate this configuration if he was serious about acquiring one. Needless to say, fine timepieces are more pricey than he had anticipated so I haven't gotten any "let's go Rolex shopping!" texts from him in the days that have followed. But the idea that he may want a Rolex is stuck in my head now...   **#DATEJUST4DAD**   That brings us to today; I am listing about half my watch collection for sale/trade with the intention to surprise my Dad with a 2013 dated Rolex Datejust 36 with fluted bezel on stainless steel Jubilee bracelet. Obviously, a trade of some combination of my watches for a 2013 DJ would be most convenient for me, but I understand that someone with a 2013 DJ36 may not have any interest in my eclectic mix of watches, so I'm prepared to sell however many watches as necessary to get the funds to outright purchase the watch, as needed.   With that said, as much as I think it would have tremendous sentimental value to gift my Dad a 2013 dated DJ, I imagine my Dad will be moved all the same if I surprise him with a Rolex, irrespective of the date on the papers.
