This is a great collectors opportunity; an extremely rare 10 carat rolled gold gentlemans’ Gruen wrist alarm watch, dating to the mid 1950’s. One of the first wrist alarm watches. What makes it very interesting is the alarm indicator next to 9 o’clock. When the alarm is activated by pulling out the lower crown, the indicator changes to green. In great original un-restored condition, the watch presents very well on the wrist. The movement is running and keeping time with the alarm function working correctly, although would probably benefit from a service, time grapher shows in the different positions as good as -30 or as bad as -60 or so. The watch is signed in three places, on the dial, case and movement. Case: 10 carat rolled gold with a stainless back in good condition, measuring approximately 35 mm across, excluding the crowns and 45 mm from lug to lug. It shows the expected signs of use over the years but absolutely no signs of abuse, dents or scratches of any significance that I could see to draw to your attention. Dial: factory original satin silver starburst finish, signed “Gruen Precision Alarm Swiss”. Gold coloured Arabic numerals and batons mark the hours, the hands are in very good shape. Movement: Gruen cal. 940 patented movement with 17 jewels. The upper crown winds both the timekeeping and alarm functions and is pulled out to set the time. The lower crown is turned clockwise to set the alarm to activate at the desired time and is pulled out to activate the alarm with the small circle next to 9 o’clock turning from red to green.
