In the 1960s there was an (unknown) race for the very first automatic chronograph movement. Ask three people and you might get three different answers on who was first. Zenith with the El Primero (AKA "the first"), The Chronomatic consortium, an association set by the top of the sector: Heuer, Hamilton-Buren, Breitling, and Dubois Depraz with their caliber 11, or Seiko with their caliber 6139...all released in 1969. What we do know. Zenith was the first to start working on the new movement in 1960. They were also the first to announce and show a working prototype to the press on January 10th 1969. Zenith was also the only fully integrated chronograph movement...not a module added on top of an existing movement. Zenith was also the first with a "high beat" 36,000vph (5Hz) movement making their chronograph accurate to 1/10th of a second compared to the competition's 1/8th. The El Primero movement really gained fame by being selected by Rolex for their Daytona chronograph. It marked the first time the Daytona was an automatic instead of manual wind movement, and served as the base from 1988-2000 when Rolex finally introduced their own movement. It should be noted that Rolex did highly modify the movement and reduced its vph to 28,800. I like watches with interesting histories and also have iconic "timeless" designs. The Chronomaster Original certainly ticks those boxes. This version is a virtual clone of the 1969 A386...but there are several differences. This version has the updated El Primero 3600 movement where the seconds hand rotates around the dial once every 10 seconds, a chrono seconds totalizer, and markings to read 1/10th of a second. An updated watch...with an iconic design. I purchased this watch brand new in 2023. It is in excellent near new condition.
