An unique iteration of the IWC Cal. 89. This model from the 1970s features a warm beige dial in contrast with an unusual C-Shape case in stainless steel. The Cal. 89 is a prime example of the “form follows function” philosophy, exhibiting beauty in simplicity and utility. In 1946, IWC introduced the now legendary Calibre 89 movement. It marked the debut project of IWC Technical Director Albert Pellaton, who first gained expertise at Vacheron Constantin. While best known for powering the Mk. XI pilots' watches issued by the British Ministry of Defence, the Calibre 89 was also found in minimalist 3-hand dress watches. The bulletproof manual-winding Calibre 89 features 17 jewels, an overcoil balance spring and Incabloc shock protection for the balance wheel. The movement bridges are finished with Geneva stripes and bevelled edges. This example of the Cal. 89 brings attention to the atypical C-Shape case which was rarely seen. At a width of 36mm, the jumbo size was considered oversized by vintage standards. The case is satin-finished and bordered by a polished, chamfered bezel. Exhibited on the light beige toned dial are three contrasting fonts unique to vintage IWC pieces. The baton shaped hour markers are applied in silver with the surfaces treated in black. Now available. ***Condition Report*** This IWC Cal. 89 is in overall great condition for its age. The original and untouched factory dial shows light patina. The case is nice and unpolished, still reflecting the brushed surface finish with some minor wear on the caseback. The original signed crown clicks in and out smoothly and has excellent winding action. The movement keeps excellent time. The caseback gasket was recently replaced with a new one. The watch comes fitted on a new black leather strap with a steel buckle. Delivered with a complimentary blue travel pouch.
