**Model:** Seiko SBCG003 Kinetic / 9T82-0AE0 **Year:** 2004 **Features:** ***- The Video.*** [Click here to see a video of the watch in action.](https://www.instagram.com/p/C_ieVxwIJ5X/) **- The Newsletter.** I wrote about this watch, and others, in greater detail in my weekly newsletter. [Click here to read it in full.](https://provenancewatches.substack.com/p/colour-can-definitely-break-a-watch)  ***- The History.*** The SBCG003 was released in 2004 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first Japanese Chronograph. When Tokyo hosted the Olympics in 1964, Seiko was given the honour of being the “Official Timer” for the event. Seiko saw this as a prime opportunity to promote their brand on the global stage and quickly got to work designing various watches for the games. One notable creation was Seiko’s (and Japan’s) first chronograph watch: The Crown Chronograph.  ***- The Design.*** Built with the same design philosophy as the 1964 Crown Chronograph—focusing on usability and readability—the SBCG003 looks busy yet sharp. With sapphire crystals on both the front and back, and a scratch-proof ceramic bezel, it’s clear that Seiko spared no expense. This was reflected in its original price, as it cost several thousand dollars in 2004, not accounting for inflation. However, the real highlight lies within the watch...  ***- The Movement.*** Seiko’s legendary 9T82 Kinetic 38-jewel movement is a marvel of innovation. Power is generated by the motion of your wrist, spinning a rotor like an automatic watch. However, instead of storing energy in a wound spring, this energy is stored in a rechargeable capacitor. This design provides the reliability of a quartz-driven movement with the longevity of an automatic. And the capacitor only needs replacement approximately every 15 years, compared to the 1-2 year lifespan of a typical quartz watch battery!  ***- The Craftsmanship.*** The connection between the 9T82 Kinetic and the modern Spring Drive is undeniable. The 9T82 was introduced a few years before the Spring Drive’s commercial debut, with both aiming to create a self-powered movement that offers quartz reliability. The future of the 9T82 movement is also closely tied to the Spring Drive, as the movement is serviced by the skilled Grand Seiko repairmen in the Shinshu Watch Studio, which is the same artisan studio that hand-assembles every Spring Drive.  ***- The Functionality*****.** 1/10 second chronograph, alongside a 60 second chronograph and a 12-hour/30-minute chronograph. A lot going on, but that explains the four dials at least. I can’t demonstrate it over the internet, but the chrono-pushers on this feel fantastic.  **Details:**  **Condition:** It's hugely important to consider the inside of this watch rather than the outside. The capacitor is notoriously difficult to replace, as the entire watch needs to be taken apart to access it. Luckily you for, the watch was just fully serviced and given a fresh 15-year capacitor by Seiko’s aforementioned *Shinshu Watch Studio* (2024). In great shape, with very few markings anywhere on the case. The only obvious marks are on the caseback and the tiny non-ceramic part of the bezel. The rest of the watch feels unworn. The original inner and outer boxes are showing signs of aging.  **Scope:** Original inner and outer boxes, as well as the original manual.  **Movement:** 38 Jewels Kinetic 9T82  **Case Width:** 45.0mm  **Case Thickness:** 14mm  **Strap Length:** The original bracelet - fits up to 20cm or 7.8 inches.  **Price:** Offered at $2450 + shipping. I accept a wide range of payment options, depending on your transaction history. Transaction fees paid by you, where relevant. **Of note:** Nothing to report.  [Album](https://imgur.com/a/F6hRZnI) [Proof](https://imgur.com/a/RhGK3Dq)
