1961 Platinum IWC Video:
For sale is an exceptional example of a vintage platinum-cased IWC Calatrava. The caliber 8531 inside is an automatic movement with date, and features the reliable, efficient, and shock-resistant Pellaton winding system exclusive to IWC. The case is sharp with thick lugs and fully intact brushed finishing.
The interesting thing about the case, other than platinum being the rarest precious metal used in watches, is that during the 1960’s import duties were very high on platinum in Japan. So IWC contracted with their distributor in Japan, Isomura, to manufacture the case in-country and shipped the incomplete watches to Japan for final assembly. These watches are denoted with a small Japanese flag on the inside of the caseback, and are very rare.
The case measures 34.5mm wide without crown, with a 41.25mm lug to lug length and 18mm lug width. Because of the relatively very large dial it wears a bit larger than the case might suggest. Wrist shot is of it on my ~6.75" wrist for reference. Movement was recently serviced before I purchased, appears super clean, and is running very well per timegrapher.
I'm asking $2,895 shipped in the US, payment via Zelle, Venmo, or wire. I am happy to accommodate international shipping and will only charge the difference in cost on top. Also willing to meet F2F, north of Boston. I'm not interested in trades.
