[WTS] Dec. 1965 Seiko 5 "Sportsmatic Deluxe" (7619-7030), Japan Made, Push-to-Set Date Function
For sale is this vintage Seiko 5 "Sportsmatic Deluxe" (7619-7030), made in Japan in December 1965. The condition is fantastic for a 60 year-old watch. The famous Seiko 5 series was introduced just 2 years prior to the release of this watch in 1963 with the core principles of every Seiko 5 watch to be automatic, have a day/date function, have water resistance, a recessed crown at 4 o'clock and to be durable for everyday wear, all of which still carry on to this day. This model is a classic example of Seiko's design, balancing presence with elegance. This design was released prior to when Seiko started homogenising their now-ubiquitous Seiko logo, that adorns all Seiko watches, making this quite a rarity. The sunburst dial is a silvery white and pairs nicely to the high-polish stick baton indexes, which have subtle but detailed facets. The sharp dauphine hands are classic Seiko style. The minute track is on the rehaut, which prevents the dial from feeling too flat and gives it a more sporty look (sporty for the '60s, this would be considered more of a dress watch nowadays). The "5" symbol is applied. The case has great proportions and carries on with the Seiko DNA, but with a slightly more "jumbo" size at 38mm as was the style in the '60s. Might be a good dress watch option for those who have average to slightly larger wrists, if you prefer a watch with some presence. The case back has the dolphin symbol signifying its water resistance. Note that it became illegal to write "waterproof" on watches around the late '60s/early '70s because past a certain depth, all watches eventually give in to the water pressure and therefore no watch could be completely called "waterproof" so from then on watch companies could only write "water resistant" to a certain depth. However, this watch was released prior to that. The calibre 7619 movement is a work-horse movement, very robust in its design. Keeps good time. I would assume the reason why this model was a "deluxe" is due to a special function where there is a button above the crown that quick-sets the date forwards with each push - a very handy feature that I don't understand why they don't do anymore! The day change is the slow-set type. The watch is in great condition for its age and only has minor wear on the case, dial and crystal. There is a small chip in the crystal at the 6 o'clock. General wear is expected. Comes on a brand new strap. Dimensions are: 38mm x 43mm x 12.6mm Lug Width 18mm Bought in Japan.
