On offer is a rather unusual and uncommon dive watch from Elgin. The chunky tonneau case gives it a proper tool-watch feel and impressive wrist presence. It's very similar to the Seiko Navigator issued around the same time. Elgin is a somewhat underrated brand, imho, but it's gaining more of a following, especially given the rising interest in the m135 diver. So, here's a chance to get a nice one at an affordable price. Great starter watch for someone beginning their collection, or a nice daily-wearer (it's as rugged as a tank) for an established hunter & gatherer.
Unpolished, all original, and signed in five places--dial, crown, movement, caseback exterior, caseback interior. Running strong and keeping good time.
The Case: Chunky 39mm tonneau dive case, all steel. Model designation (m280) on caseback interior, along with movement FHF 909 and series 5004). Sharp, unpolished with minimal wear. Lovely original brushed steel finish.
The Dial: A very pleasing piece of work with lots of appealing details. Matte black dial with graduated exterior dial for minute markers and hour lume dots. Inner dial has sub-second hashes and thick rectangular hour lumes that have a rich, buttery patina. Nice contrast in the white stick batons and a colour-pop in the orange sweep second. Day/Date has a bold white outline.
The Movement: Elgin-signed Swiss FHF 909 automatic movement. FHF was a late arrival on the Swiss automatic movement scene, putting them in competition with ETA. This one is very clean, and all functions work properly.
The Bezel: Bidirectional bezel turns smoothly with good resistance. Smooth, even ghosting makes a nice complement to the un-faded black dial. I find the overall effect quite pleasing, as it offers a soft transition from the dial to the case. Numbers still legible.
Measurements:
39mm diameter
45.6mm lug to lug
19mm between the lugs
13.9mm thickness
Comes on a black rubber tropic strap, other options possible.
$500 ONO
Shipping to US, Canada, UK/Europe by method of buyer's choosing. Other destinations possible, with arrangements tbd.
