Hello OF members,
After the recent vintage Movado article on Hodinkee there seems to be a little more interest so I decided to offer this piece.
Here we have a Movado triple calendar moonphase AKA the Celestograf or the Astrograf. All the pushers are functioning well, the watch is running strong, has not been tested for accuracy but I have not noted any major variations while wearing it. I would say it keeps good vintage time.
Case: Rose gold top, a thick layer of gold over the steel base. I believe it to be the original crown. It had a screwdown caseback which is a big plus. It does have a personalized engraving on the caseback. One downside of this watch is the small size. It measures about 33 mm diameter (maybe slightly under) and about 40 mm lug to lug. I provided caliper photos, please inspect them. I am not an expert but it looks unpolished to me, please judge for yourself by the photos.
Dial: It was sold to me as original but after carefully inspecting it with a loupe at home I believe it is a redial. It is a good one though. Without the loupe I honestly cannot tell. I suppose it was too clean to be original as the water resistance of these cases, even with the screw down back, was not good. The redial is reflected in the price, substantially less than what I paid. My loss your gain as they say.
So in other words, IMHO, it’s a hard to find reference in a small size with an unpolished case with a very good redial, movement seems to be in good working order, overall a very clean looking piece.
