GMT-Master II

It’s 1955. Pan-Am was the world’s largest airline and their pilots were adjusting to civilian life from WWII. Rene-Paul Jenneneret’s Submariner and Explorer ‘tool-watch’ marquees caught their attention, and the airline commissioned from Swiss company a new line of instruments to help their pilots discern, with a glance, times between two distinct zones. And, with the help of decorated veteran Frank Libby, they developed the GMT-Master.

At the beginning, GMT bezels were made of highly radioactive bakelite, their lume transitioned between radium to tritium and their dials from gilt to matte with a red GMT hand, and debuted without crown guards. So much has changed since then.

The 2022 126720VTNR ‘Sprite’ has a duotone monoblock cerachrome black / green bezel with platinum deposits, its lume composed of chromalight, its white hands, hour indices, and green GMT marker framed in white gold juxtaposed against a black lacquer dial, its case oystersteel (a high nickel alloy), and, to top it off, it’s triplock crown and guard are positioned ‘Destro’ (at the nine!). The Left-Handed GMT’s 70 hours of power reserve, waterlock crown and caseback to 100 meters, equipped with Rolex’s blue parachrom hairspring endowing shock and magnetic resistance, help prevent corrosion and increase legibility in low-light environments making the watch an incredibly capable tool.

Compared to other GMT-Master IIs, the watch may not be innovative, but it is qualified. The ‘Sprite’ may not break ground, but, in harsh conditions, it won’t break down.
