When Seiko introduced the “Craftsmanship” series, the Urushi models quickly drew attention—especially the SARX029. The main focus here is the dial. The SARX029 features a deep black Urushi lacquer dial—Urushi being the Japanese word for natural lacquer, similar in look and longevity to enamel. This lacquer comes from the sap of the Japanese lacquer tree and is known to retain its rich finish for decades. The process is highly involved and rarely used in watchmaking because of how time-consuming it is. Each layer—several base coats, an intermediate coat, a top coat, and a final polish—is carefully applied and sanded with Suruga charcoal to ensure proper bonding and a flawless finish. Oversight of the work was handled by Isshu Tamura, a well-respected Urushi artisan in Japan. He saw the pairing of traditional lacquerwork and watchmaking as a natural match that reflects the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship. The SARX029 features a deep black Urushi lacquer dial, paired with gold hands and a matching gold-framed date window, both done in the traditional Maki-e technique. The white Roman numerals, Seiko logo, and date display are positioned cleanly, keeping everything balanced and consistent. The case measures 40.5mm in width, 12mm thick, with a lug-to-lug length of 47.8mm and a 20mm lug width. On top is a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inside, offering a clear view of the dial while sitting flush with the polished case. As part of the JDM-only Presage line, the SARX029 is powered by Seiko’s 6R15 automatic movement, offering a 50-hour power reserve and accuracy rated between -15 to +25 seconds per day. Around back, you’ll find an open display caseback showing off the movement. The watch is in excellent condition with minor hairline scratches on the case and case back. Crystal is nice and clean. The watch features on custom leather straps with original buckle. The watch has been serviced so it keeps excellent time. Watch comes with Seiko box, no papers.
