The Recta Watch Company was originally founded by Antoine Muller (1861 - 1930) and Alcide Vaucher (1860 - 1924) in Bien, Switzerland in 1897. At that time it was called the Muller & Vaucher Fabrique d’Horlogerie. In 1898 the name Recta was registered and they built their own factory in Bien in 1902. Eduard Tieche was appointed Head of Sales in 1905 and soon after the company became famous for high quality, precision pocket watches and chronometers which were certified to be of a high enough standard for use in Observatories. A bigger factory was built in 1913 and the company name was changed to Recta SA Fabrique d’Horlogerie in 1917. In 1915 they began making compasses which they housed in pocket watch cases in addition to watches. The company invented the liquid compass known as the DP Model in 1941 which was initially used by the Swiss Army and is now used by armies worldwide. Recta now only makes compasses and is owned by the Finnish Compass Company, Suunto. Recta watches with in-house movements usually date back to the time before the 60s. Records and history about Recta cease around 1984 but remarkable examples from the brand are available in beautiful condition, mostly in the hands of collectors these days. For sale is a very interesting Recta whereby it's dial numerals are seen clearly on hitting the lights on certain angles, making it looks as if it is all black. Case width is about 31.5mm without crown and 34.5mm with. Lug width is close to 16mm. Watch is running but not timed for and last service history unknown.
