[WTS] Vintage Forsyth Chronograph Landeron 48 movement
This is a vintage 1950s chronograph men’s watch by Forsythe. This watch is a little bit unusual because it is triple signed....by three different companies. And believe it or not, it’s all original! The dial is signed Forsythe, the movement is signed Canal Watch Co, and the case is signed Gloria Watch Co. I know that these parts are all original because there are many examples of other Forsythe Chronographs that have popped up online over the years and almost all of them are signed the same way. After doing some digging, it seems that Forsythe was a subsidiary brand of Canal Watch Company. There is very little information regarding Canal online, however it seems to be one of the many more obscure Swiss watch companies of the 1940s-60s. I was unable to find information regarding Gloria watch company, however it seems likely that Canal hired Gloria to supply the cases for their chronograph watches. It was not unusual in this era for companies to buy cases from different companies to save costs on production. It is also possible that Gloria was yet another subsidiary of Canal, but is hard to say for sure because information is so scarce. This watch is an excellent and handsome example of a 1950s chronograph. The military style black dial features both a telemeter and tachymeter sub-track to increase the capabilities of this watch. A simple explanation for how to use the tachymeter would be to time a car race. If you started the chronograph at the start of the race and stopped it once they crossed the finish line, you would be able to determine their average speed (assuming you knew the distance of the race). The telemeter function is measured based on the speed of sound. For example, if you started the chronograph when you saw a bolt of lightning and stopped it when you heard the thunder, the chronograph hand would tell you how far away the lightning struck. The dial is in overall excellent condition with some patina. It still has its original lume on the numerals, however the hands have been re-lumed. The crown seems to be original but protrudes ever so slightly further out when it should, this likely is due to a repair at some point in the past. Case diameter is about 35mm but wears a little larger. A beautiful example of a vintage time piece. I’m asking $600 but open to offers. Thanks for looking!
