# 1961 Platinum IWC Video: [https://youtube.com/shorts/i64VrSk9JtA?feature=share](https://youtube.com/shorts/i64VrSk9JtA?feature=share) For sale is an exceptional example of a vintage platinum-cased IWC Calatrava. The caliber 853 inside is an automatic movement featuring the reliable, efficient, and shock-resistant Pellaton winding system exclusive to IWC. The case is sharp with thick lugs, sharp edges, and fully intact brushed finishing. The interesting thing about the case, other than platinum being the rarest precious metal used in watches, is that during the 1960’s import duties were very high on platinum in Japan. So IWC contracted with their distributor in Japan, Isomura, to manufacture the case in-country and shipped the incomplete watches to Japan for final assembly. These watches are denoted with a small Japanese flag on the inside of the caseback, and are very rare. The case measures 35mm wide without crown, with a 42.6mm lug to lug length and 18mm lug width. Because of the relatively very large dial it wears a bit larger than the case might suggest. Wrist shot is of it on my \~6.75" wrist for reference. Service history unknown but there are some service markings in the case and movement is in strong running condition per timegrapher. Top right lug may have been repaired, though if so very cleanly.
