In the late 1960s and early 1970s, King Seiko and Grand Seiko were produced at two separate factories—Daini and Suwa—set up to compete internally in the pursuit of precision, finishing, and overall execution. This watch is a direct result of that rivalry. Dating to around 1970, this reference is powered by the manually wound Caliber 4502A, part of the high-beat 45 series. Running at 36,000 vibrations per hour, it was a serious technical statement at the time, aimed squarely at improving rate stability and real-world accuracy. The movement also features an instantaneous date change at 3 o’clock, a detail that reflects how much attention was paid to everyday usability, not just specifications. The stainless steel case measures approximately 36–37mm in diameter, around 10mm thick, with a 42mm lug-to-lug. The proportions are slim and well judged, giving the watch a strong presence without feeling oversized or heavy. The case design is one of the defining elements of this reference, closely echoing contemporary Grand Seiko geometry, with clean lines, sharp angles, and carefully polished surfaces. The dial is clean and purposeful. Applied hour markers are sharply faceted, matched by equally crisp hands, all executed without lume. Instead, thin black striping runs through the center of the markers and hands, improving legibility while keeping the overall look restrained. The off-white dial surface provides just enough contrast to let the geometry speak for itself. On the caseback sits the gold King Seiko medallion, a small but meaningful detail that reflects the level of care and pride put into these watches. This example remains in great condition, showing little scratches fitting for its age and no dents. The dial is flawless. The crystal is clear.
