This watch can be explained in one single sentence - "If you know, you know". Well, what if you don't actually now? Don't worry, I'm here to explain. Many of you know the Universal Genève Polerouter. But did you know the watch was originally named Polarouter with an “A”? That’s right, folks. The history of the Polerouter dates back to 1954, when the Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) requested a watch from Universal Genève to promote and celebrate the Royal Viking’s polar flights. It was appropriately named the Polarouter (Polar + Router). However, the Polarouter lived a short life, as it was only produced during this year. In 1955, Universal Genève adopted the name we all know today. The watches were made in two executions – the 1st (serial numbers starting with 1,64x,xxx) and the 2nd (serial numbers between 1,67x,xxx and 1,69x,xxx). The example you see here is from the earliest execution, given its serial. The two executions also have a visual difference regarding how the crosshair dial crosses the words “Universal Genève” (it doesn’t cross it in later serial numbers). According to the [Universal Genève Polerouter Guide](https://universalgenevepolerouter.com/), the Polarouter was produced in very small quantities – approximately 170 per reference. Two references have been identified across the Polarouter range – 20214 and 20217, the latter of which is the earliest. Each reference had six subrefences (-1 to -6), bringing the total to about 2,000 units. It’s worth noting that the 20214 and 20217 were also used in the Polerouter models, although they’re preceded by an “S”. The Polarouters and the first Polerouters were exclusively powered by the Universal Genève Cal. 138SS, a bumper automatic movement. During my extensive research, I could only find one of this exact reference (20214-2) ever sold, at a Philips auction in 2019. It sold for 4,750 CHF, excluding the buyer’s premium. The watch you see here is in fantastic condition given its age. The case seems unpolished, with sharp edges. It comes with the original signed crystal (see picture), although it has a few scratches. Luckily, they can be polished with Polywatch. Don’t polish the underside, as that’s where the logo is etched. The crown is also the original one, even though it’s not in the best condition. I didn’t service it, but the 138SS movement is running like a champ – averaging about +8 s/d over four positions (pictures attached). However, it occasionally clicks when winding, so I’d recommend getting that checked out. Enough with the talk, let’s get into the technical details: **Details & More** **Condition:** Very good. Minor scratches in the case. Crystal has some wear (can be polished, it’s acrylic). Dial is in fantastic condition, but it was likely cleaned in the past, judging by how the text bled. The hands are in good condition. **Case size:** 34.8 x 45 mm gold-plated (250 microns) case **Movement:** Universal Genève 138SS, 17 jewels, 18000 bph. **Other information:** Original signed crown and crystal Unserviced, but runs great (+8 s/d) **Price:** I’m asking $2,450 (€2,2290) via bank wire, Wise, Revolut or PayPal F&F. Add 80$ for worldwide shipping via UPS. Shipping is €35 for European buyers (via GLS). Will consider trades for Rolex, Tudor, IWC, Breitling, Grand Seiko, and other high-end brands (Europe only).
