This movement was Seiko’s most advanced and experimental quartz movement at the time and since it was only produced for 2 years (1983-1985), it is very rare and collectible. By cutting down the quartz oscillator used from two to one that now utilizes a special cut of quartz crystal and have it perform both time and thermal compensation functions, Seiko managed to retain high accuracy and have a slimmer watch compared to the discontinued and usurped Twin Quartz lines (previously all high accuracy quartz movements had to use 2 quartz oscillators). The movement also ran at an unprecedented 196 Khz (generally the higher frequency of the quartz oscillator, the more accurate the timekeeping becomes); just for reference the first quartz watches were 8Khz and the current ones are 32Khz. This innovation revolutionized not only Seiko’s approach to high accuracy quartz movement but the industry as a whole with Bulova picking up the technology when the patent expired and incorporated it in their Accutron II and Precisionist lines, along with a new, three-pronged crystal design. The movement is a work of circuitry art (please see the photo album which shows the movement) with 5 jewels (which is pretty high for a quartz movement). It is also more battery efficient than standard quartz movements with a battery life of 3 years instead of 2. It features a two-tone case that has both a brushed and polished finish, a flawless sapphire crystal, and is paired with a stunning silver sunburst dial. It features a bilingual date-wheel that’s in both English and Japanese (Kanji).
