On offer from my personal collection is a Le Jour/Yema "Triton" chronograph in the ref. 2002 "spearfisher" case. The Triton came in a number of different variations in case, movement, and batons. This one, which dates to the late 1960s, is a very appealing combination of round lumes with broad-arrow hands. It's also one of only a couple of examples I have seen in the ref. 2002 diving-chronograph case, which was made famous by the Jenny Caribbean and is also found in use with the Ollech-Wajs Precision Diver.

The glossy dial, broad-arrow hands, and beefy 39mm case give this a commanding wrist presence.

The watch is all original, serviced in 2023, and keeping excellent time. All chrono functions work as designed. Bought from the original owner.

19mm lugs.

The Dial: Glossy black dial with no fading or loss of paint. Round tritium lumes with a lovely, warm patina. "Big eye" subdials with steel borders. Minute subdial has a regatta timer. Broad arrow hands and the "lollipop" sweep second that is characteristic of the Triton.

The Case: 39mm x 47mm. Ref. 2002 "Spearfisher" case. All edges sharp and unpolished. Minor wear and a few small scratches (see pics). This is the "jumbo" version of the ref. 2002 case, in 39mm (the 38mm, which I have in another piece, is more typical). Original screw-down crown, unsigned.

The Movement: The workhorse Valjoux 7730 movement is keeping excellent time and resets as it should. Signed J.P. Pingouin.

The Bezel: This is another unusual and attractive element. Tritons typically have a more modern "digital" font on the bezel. This, instead, has a vintage French font reminiscent of the kind found on doorplates there. The bezel teeth are also rounded rather than triangular. Together, these elements give it a distinct look, almost art nouveau in its curves.

The Brand: For those of you unfamiliar with Le Jour, they were created by Yema to distribute watches in the US--you can find Le Jour-branded versions of both the Yema Daytona and the Superman. Over time, Le Jour, primarily an assembler, produced a number of different chronographs. Le Jour-branded Wakmanns were also common. The Triton is, to my knowledge, the piece associated most distinctly with Le Jour. It was produced in 2-resister valjoux 7730, 2-register val. 92, and 3-register val. 72 versions (the latter two, which came in J.P. Pingouin cases, fetching the highest prices these days, understandably). The defining features were the black dial, round lumes (w/ big triangle at 12), and red lollipop sweep-second.
