Up for sale is this great looking circa 1950s Longines reference 6536-1 in a very cool all-stainless steel Bombé lug case and featuring a beautiful original Breguet numeral dial with wonderful eggshell patina and café au lait aged radium luminous. This great vintage Longines is in overall Excellent original condition and sports the terrific in-house caliber 19AS full rotor sweep seconds movement under the hood. At 35 mm wide, this beautifully proportioned mens watch with attractive Breguet dial wears wonderfully well on the wrist and is a really fine example of mid-century Longines design. To my eyes, this case is like a hybrid of a Rolex Bombé with its twisted, sweeping lugs and then a Patek 565, with the very distinctive flat, “non-bezel” bezel. Makes for some very interesting and eye-catching effects on the wrist, to be sure, and just a super pleasing case shape that works in wonderful harmony with that handsome ivory dial. Fully serviced in the middle of last year, this classic Longines is running well and ready to be enjoyed by the lucky new owner.
The asking price for this uncommon Longines 6536-1 is $975 USD, including fully insured domestic US shipping. International shipping will be +$75 due to increased shipping fees. CASE & BACK: Classically proportioned two-piece all-steel screw back case measure 35 mm wide (not including crown) x 44 mm long x about 12 mm tall to the top of the crystal. It appears unpolished and features very sharp edges, facets and curved Bombé-style lugs, as well as a completely flat bezel extremely similar to Patek Phillipe's famous 565 case design. Overall, the case is in Excellent vintage condition, with only small scratches and wear marks for a watch of this age. The notched, water resistant caseback also has only minor scratches, likewise Excellent original condition for a 70-year-old watch. Outer caseback is dedication-free and the inner case and back lip show negligible corrosion at their contact points. Inner back is stamped with the correct Longines nomenclature for a steel watch of the time, including not only the 6536-1 reference number but also a unique case number, “244”, that is also stamped on the underside of the top left lug. All in all, this is a really cool and dare I say unique case shape that is very pleasing to wear and admire on the wrist.
DIAL & HANDS: Beautiful original factory printed white dial with applied silver Breguet numerals for the quarter Arabics, silver teardrop “dagger” markers for the rest and attractively aged radium luminous markers all around. Applied winged hourglass logo and LONGINES printed in black on the dial below “12”, with AUTOMATIC printed above the “6”. This wonderful dial has aged to a warm and creamy ivory patina, which is beautifully complimented by the biscuity hue of the aged luminous plots. This dial does shows some light spotting and a minor mark or two but this is quite hard to see with the naked eye — Very Good original condition overall on this super charming vintage Longines dial. Polished silver pointed “dauphine”-style hour and minute hands with original luminous fill that matches the dial’s nicely, perhaps just a shade lighter, and the baton sweep seconds hand are all quite bright and attractive — Excellent condition. Simply a wonderful execution of the ever popular Breguet numeral dial!
CROWN: Correct, unsigned “bowler”-style push-in knurled steel crown is Excellent cosmetically and sits flush to the case. It winds smoothly and pulls out to the time setting position exactly as designed.
CRYSTAL: Nicely domed acrylic crystal looks period correct and is very clear and chip-free, showing only very subtle residual scratches after polishing — Excellent+.
MOVEMENT: Powering this model 6536-1 is Longines’ excellent in-house caliber 19AS automatic winding full-rotor movement with 17 jewels and shock protection. The 9.11 million movement serial number dates the watch to circa mid-1950s from the best available information. The caliber number and all other nomenclature of the period is present, as is an “LXW” import mark on the balance assembly, indicating a US-market watch. Not only is the 19AS extremely well finished and handsome to look at but, as mentioned above, this high grade movement was recently overhauled in June of 2023, and so is keeping very good time with a strong power reserve. Ready to wear and enjoy from day one!
BAND: This Longines comes on a new water resistant grained black leather strap with sporty white contrast stitching that really compliments the watch nicely, IMO. It also features a generic steel buckle. This classic Longines takes 18 mm straps.
As a matter of policy, I make NO guarantees for the water resistance of this watch in any way, shape or form.
This great genuine vintage Longines 6536-1 is offered with a 3-day inspection period from the date of receipt and may be returned for a full refund (less any shipping costs incurred by the buyer). This refund is unconditional and once I get the watch back in exactly the same condition as it was sent to you, your money will be refunded. Of course, once the 3 days are over the sale will be considered FINAL.
Thanks for looking,
T.
