You often hear that with vintage watches, it’s about the story. Well, this is a Rolex with a STORY! This World War II era Rolex Viceroy comes straight from the original family. This belonged to my friend’s grandfather. In going through some family belongings recently she found it hidden away. And that’s when her family filled in the details: her grandfather was a POW in World War II. When he miraculously returned home, this watch was gifted to him - they’re not sure by who - but they believe it was to commemorate his experience during the war. Naturally it means a lot to her, but she’s holding on to a ladies watch from her grandmother and would love this to live on with a collector who will appreciate it as much as her grandfather did and build the next generation of stories. REFERENCE: 3359 DATE: 1945 DIAL: The dial has been refinished. Based on the wear, the color the lume has aged, and how it reacts under UV light (all sparking briefly and uniformly) I believe this was refinished in the late 1950s or early 1960s. I also believe the Mercedes hands are original - they have such a cool look to them, along with the entire cream colored patina dial! CRYSTAL: Plexi crystal is in good shape with wear throughout. CASE: 29MM x 38MM case is in surprisingly good condition for its age, including the original rose gold bezel! It wears larger that its numbers, given the shape (photographed on my 6.6 inch wrist) I’d say similar to a 34MM round watch. Wear throughout, of course, mostly seen on the case back. Also check out the rare “Oyster Patent” crown! MOVEMENT: Hand wound Rolex movement (another indication of the refinished dial, “perpetual” it is not!) has not been touched for many years as far as my friend knows. Although a testament to Rolex’s quality, it winds and set well, with timegrapher showing app 1 min per day and an amplitude of 204. Happy to have this serviced by my watchmaker at cost prior to shipping, which would come with a one year warranty, if the new owner wishes.
