As soon as automatic winding was invented, the Manufacture’s watchmakers were of the opinion that an automatic watch no longer required a manually operating winding device any more than a car of the time needed a crank to start it. So what could be more obvious than to create a watch without a winding crown? After several years of research, in a world first, Jaeger LeCoultre introduced a movement that met this criterion, calibre 497. The watch is set by sliding (NOT PULLING) the hand setting wheel on the back of the watch. The watch is wound by a bumper movement activated by everyday wear. The watch automatically stops itself with 6hrs of power reserve remaining so that it will begin running immediately upon being picked up and set, if stopped. The winding mechanism automatically stops itself by utilizing a tiny claw spring once the mainspring is fully wound. This is one of the first automatic watches in the world to feature hacking seconds. These calibres were produced ONLY from 1951 to 1957 - don’t miss your chance to own a piece of horological history, TODAY!
