Computer, Jubilee, Anniversary; a selection of names honoring a single important keystone within the Rolex timeline – the brand’s 80th birthday.

At first glance, this 1987 Day-Date seems an object of opulence, but there remains a method to the monarchy. Textured variegations between the em and debossing of Rolex’s tessellated typeface result from, not of stamping, but a machined process. Gold is pressed, punching a grain and knurling between the repeated motif’s negative spacing. Furnishing the gold dial are from-factory diamond hour markers, gold hands, day window at twelve and ‘Date-Date’ plate set above six. Diamonds adorn the bezel, the 18k gold president bracelet and, as a result, the 18348 wears heavily on the wrist.

Every once in while, Rolex relaxes tradition, loosening the simplicity and utility it’s oft defined by. The 80s were a decade of decadence, and so this watch, with its monogram dial and gold and diamonds, is testament to an era.

This watch’s significance is celebration. 150 grams of gold, of diamonds, justifying 80 years of Swiss chronometric excellence.
