Timestamp: https://imgur.com/a/3JQROpy Hello, all!   Up for sale is my recently serviced, late 50’s Gruen Ocean Chief Diver on a (purchased from eBay) vintage Tropic strap.   This watch is beautiful, wears incredibly, and runs perfectly. Black dial is glossy! Gilt accents are sparkly! All lume on hands and dial is original! No cracks, no burning, no tropicalization, and not relumed. See pictures. The concave, bidirectional, stadium-style bezel is original and in great condition for a 60-year-old dive watch. Bezel rotates without issue.    The Gruen 560 RSS movement is excellent. It’s a fun and quirky automatic in that gives a nice “whirr” sound as it winds on your wrist that is loud enough to hear if you’re listening for it, but not loud enough to hear if you aren’t. (characteristic for these)   This watch was made at a time when today’s most sought-after brands weren’t viewed the same way they are now. The field of competition was more open, and tool watches were still relatively new in the 50s (and rare at 39mm).   The Ocean Chief was designed and manufactured to directly outcompete the earliest Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, Breitling SuperOceans, and Rolex Subs. It had more lume, a similar concave bezel design to the Fifty Fathoms and SuperOceans, unique “snake head" hands, and a reliable automatic Swiss movement. It may be the only one of its class of competitors that hasn’t been reissued in some form and packs a ton of vintage value in that regard.    Issues (see pictures):   1. During service, the prior owner had the crystal replaced, as it was cracked. I have the original crystal, and it will ship with the watch. 2. During service, the prior owner had the crown replaced because the inner gasket was stripped and couldn't be replaced. I was informed that it doesn't have o-ring gaskets, but instead a sheath. I have the original crown, and it will ship with the watch. The replacement is nearly identical. 3. There is a small fleck of gold “gilt” under the 9:00marker that seems to be staying put. This is not a dial blemish. 4. There are the usual blemishes/scuffs on the bezel, but overall, this thing is a beast and is really something on the wrist. Some guys try to remove these. I loved them. You can’t seen them in most light, but at risk of doing this thing an injustice, I did take some pictures under a bright lamp to expose all of these. 5. Per prior owner, service was performed at Paradise Time Service in Indiana just prior to when I bought it.    This was my grail. I have owned it for the better part of the year and worn it maybe half a dozen times since acquiring it. I planned on keeping it forever, and am truly sad about having to sell it, but times change.   I’ll ship it along with the eBay authentication packaging and documentation it came with, plus the original crown and crystal.   As far as pricing goes, I have searched the internet for comparisons. Obviously, you will pay more than this for a similar watch from a dealer. There are currently just three for sale between Chrono24 and eBay right now in similar condition. All will incur tariffs and shipping costs from Europe, along with sales tax. The one closest to this in terms of its condition will not ship to the U.S.   Asking $5,800 obo shipped CONUS from Ohio. All sales final. Payment via Paypal G&S or cryptocurrency (USDC, BTC, ETH, XRP). I am willing to cover shipping and insurance so those are included in the price. Buyer add 3% for G&S fee. Must have positive transaction history on r/watchexchange. No new profiles.
