The Panerai Submersible PAM1164 Goldtech is the coolest precious metal tool watch I’ve ever seen, full stop. Granted, I’m a little biased as I’m a huge fan of the Submersible, but I also love Panerai’s Goldtech — it has a warm, bronzy hue to it that feels both super-luxe, but also quite masculine and a bit more low-key than the precious metals you’ll see from other high-end Swiss makers.

If you’re new to this particular reference, the 42mm PAM1164 differs from other gold Submersibles in a few key aspects:



1) It has a closed, DLC-coated titanium caseback, and a proper 300 meters of water resistance (it is a dive watch after all). This one has its X-serial engraved, next to its relatively low production number.
2) It’s powered by the P.900 automatic movement, but the movement in this watch hacks and handwinds, unlike other versions of this calibre
3) This is a full Goldtech case, which is Panerai’s slightly more stable red gold alloy, compared to earlier versions of the Submersible (which had the display caseback) which were just traditional red gold. It also has the cool “Submersible” and depth rating written in matching gold on the dial.
4) The reference number was recently changed to 1164 as the included straps are now rubber and the recycled ballistic kevlar-style strap, rather than alligator.

Bought this back at the beginning of the summer (warranty card is dated May 2023) and it’s been a safe queen ever since — watch presents as new, with the exception of a light hairline ‘wiggle’ on the gold pin buckle, which the watch came with when bought new from the AD (likely as a result of their handling).

Manufacturer’s tags were cut as I had every intention of going the distance with this one, but watch was only tried on, then it spent the summer in my safe. Asking a very competitive $16,900 for a watch that presents as new (and just saw another price hike with its msrp creeping up on the doorstep of $30k), wire preferred, will throw in a few goodies from the Panerai boutique with the sale.
