I challenge you to find another vintage diver that offers as much “pop” on the wrist as this Orient SK “rainbow diver”. It features the Orient Cal. 46943, a 21,600 bph automatic 21J movement with day/date indicator (and Orient’s funky quickset for the day at the button at 2 o’clock.) It features an internally rotating bezel—more on that in a sec—and an unusual fluted external bezel. The crown at 4 o’clock rotates the bezel. The watch does not hack or hand wind. From my understanding, the deeper you go, the water filters out different wavelengths of light. The colors turn gray as you reach the depth indicated. Since this is a vintage watch, you probably shouldn’t dive with it to test out the theory, but it provides an interesting backstory to the very cool and colorful bezel. The rest of the watch is stunning. The thick, meaty hands compliment the large, angular raised indices. A big domed acrylic crystal covers up the whole shebang. The gold sunburst dial is incredible in the light. And, somehow, despite its substantial size, it’s not a very heavy watch. Wears incredibly well at 40mm diameter with 22mm lugs and is thus a very modern size. Brand new aftermarket bracelet included. The condition is excellent given the age. At a glance, it’s hard to tell that it’s a 1970s watch, it looks like it could be a modern reissue. Timegrapher shows it to be running well and keeping time. NOTE: the service history and seal condition are unknown. I haven’t opened this watch up, and although I do wear it I have kept it away from moisture. At a minimum, having the seals replaced is probably prudent. I certainly would not recommend immersing the watch at all without having the watch pressure tested by a professional first. That said, there’s no indication it needs anything immediately. It’s just a nice vintage watch in better-than-average shape.
