Dear OF,
Since this is my first watch sale ever, please go easy on me. The description may be too verbose but I think it's better to describe things in detail. Some photos were made in daylight and others with a LED flashlight.
For sale is my second Grand Seiko 4522-8000.
It's a manual vintage watch with 36000 BPH. The backplate says water proof instead not water resistant(1970+ watches say water resist because of law changes in Japan). I will provide the full serial number of both movement and caseback to any interested buyers via PM.
I bought it for myself but then I bought another one which was already serviced and never got to servicing or wearing this one, I already have a few 45KS spares and 45GS is too expensive to keep as a spare plus I need to fund more watches anyway.(I will be selling some 45KS soon too, since I have more spares than needed)
45XX is one of the few manual vintage 36000 bph movements of Seiko. It's very popular because of the smooth hand movement(10 beats per second). There are only 4 such 45XX movements used only in King Seiko and Grand Seiko and they were only produced between 1968 and 1973. Therefore making this watch more than 50 years old.
I am selling just the watch without lug spring bars or a strap(I can give you a random old strap with spring bars from a spare KS if you really need them, but they will probably be old and possibly rusty/dirty). Personally I prefer new straps with quick release.
The lug distance is 18mm.
Case size is 36 x 41 mm.
My advice is to get a quick release leather strap from Hirsch. You can buy an additional GS buckle from VTA(16mm) on eBay(or a genuine used one but it's 15mm and costs a lot more). This is just my personal opinion. I have no affiliation with those so I don't provide referral links or anything like that.
You can also buy an aftermarket medallion to replace it if you want. I wanted to offer one for free, but due to forum rules I am pulling it back.
Condition:
- The quickset works
- The watch starts when wound(you need to pull the crown to the last position and then push it back all the way, this is standard on all 45XX Seiko, even when freshly serviced, I have confirmed this on all KS and GS and talked to other collectors about it)
- However it hasn't been serviced recently(don't have info on service history) and the date sometimes gets stuck in the middle when advancing the hours manually(i tried it again just today and it worked fine), I believe it's probably gunk as it was a bit dirty on the outside when I got it. I have only got it open once to make the photos of the movement but I haven't touched the movement at all. Of course I used a press with a piece of nylon to protect the back from additional scratches.(even though it's already scratched, as you can see on the photos, but so are even all my KS/GS watches, at first I was annoyed but now I don't care as much. In normal/day lighting it's still shiny, it only looks very scratched under a led flashlight).
- There are no major scratches or dings and the watch shines despite the small scratches.
- The dial has light stains but no peeling
(please see the photos for more detail)
- The crystal has light scratches, unnoticeable unless looked in light.
- The bezel looks shiny without any dings
- The hands look very nice
- The crown looks very nice, no dirt or anything(some old Seikos have very dirty crowns for some reason)
- The medallion has some peeling and staining. It looks original to me(I compared it to my second 4522 and to my other KS/GS watches.). If it bothers you too much - you can buy an aftermarket medallion yourself(I think it can easily cost ~ 40€ by itself), so you can swap it if you want.
Do note that a lot of GS being sold don't come with a genuine medallion and it's not stated anywhere that you're getting an aftermarket one. I believe this one is real.
- I measured a time difference of 3 mins in 12 hours while laid flat. I haven't demagnetized the watch so it could be magnetized. Again this was a one time measurement, so it comes without guarantees in terms of accuracy.
Note:
The visual condition is subjective so I am going to provide lots of photos. Of course depending on lighting and angle a watch can look better or worse. My opinion is that it looks very nice in natural light(the other 4522 I am keeping looks only slightly better yet it costed me much more, yet it has very slight peeling, but less stains, I've never seen an ideal one tbh). Of course feel free to ask for more photos/etc. I want the perspective buyer to be fully satisfied with the visual condition of the watch before buying it.
The price I am looking for is 575€/622$(plus tracked shipping with insurance which I will have to check additionally). I live in EU so there will be no taxes if you're in EU too hopefully making it a good deal(most GS sold online is not from EU and incurs at least 20% tax or more).
I accept Revolut and PayPal(I will have to check how it works since I have no experience selling through it).
I am only accepting returns from other established forum members if somehow the watch is non-genuine(which sounds impossible since I have compared it to numerous images online and my other 4522-8000) or looks objectively different from the photos(not due to lighting, angles, etc.) No buyers remorse/etc. please. Since it's an old unserviced mechanical item I make no guarantee on the accuracy, duration(how long it runs when wound fully) or date change working correctly every time and recommend servicing before using it in all cases.
Since it's my first sale, I am willing to provide additional proof such as setting the time to a value you want and shooting a video of it running. I hope this will further alleviate concerns.
I will be packing it wrapped in bubble wrap inside a plastic box wrapped in more bubble wrap inside a cardboard box for extra safety. Photos of this will also be supplied to the buyer together with the tracking code.
Note:
The aftermarket medallion in the photos is just shown as a reference and for you to compare to the real one. It's not included in the sale due to forum rules.
Thanks
