Aurore Sous Marine 300m, Bakelite Bezel, Helium valve
Aurore Sous Marine 300m, Bakelite Bezel, Helium valve
On offer is a lovely Aurore Sous Marine dive watch, rated 300m, dating to approx. 1965. The "sous marine," along with the "securite mer," are the two most common styles of swiss-cased, swiss-movement, French-dialed tool watches produced in the 1960s and early 1970s. "Sous marine" (trans. "submarine") were part of the general boom in dive-watch making that prevailed in this period. The sous marine line were proper dive watches, as is clear from their robust construction and high atmos rating, along with their specialized HEV crowns (see below). They were produced under a number of brands, including Yema/Le Jour, Aurole, and Edma Super. More detail on the history of the sous marine watches can be found here.
Case & Dial: The 41mm, all-steel case has an impressive wrist presence, especially for a vintage watch from this period. The dial is in the squale-style, with applied trapezoidal indices in an art deco style at the cardinal points, including a metal-framed date window. These are supplemented by smaller, round lumes at the non-cardinal points. It has rectilinear batons with a bifurcated arrowhead at the minute counter, and a small-lollipop sweep second. The case is in good shape, with sharp edges and retaining its original matte factory-finish (unpolished). Lettering on back is clearly visible, though, as is commonly the case with flat watchbacks, shows some honest wear.
Bezel: The bakelite bezel is a particular highlight. Free of chips or cracks, this is the only time I've seen this colour combo of orange hashes and numerals on a black background. The bakelite is embedded in a thick metal frame with crenelated edges. As is common with such bezels, there has been some slight air intrusion between the top and middle layers of the bakelite, but there is no fading and all the demarcations are clearly visible.
Movement: The movement is a workhorse A. Schild 1882/83 automatic. It's very clean, running strong, and keeping good time. Service history is unknown.
Unusual Crown: A rare feature of many of the Sous Marine is the screw-down crown. This was designed as an HEV "helium escape valve." This is a special feature designed to assist in the decompression stages of saturation diving. It's too long a process to describe here, but this link explains it in great detail. Will you ever need it? No--who goes saturation diving with a watch that's nearly 80 years old? Is it pretty cool? Absolutely.
IMHO, these are underappreciated (and currently undervalued) pieces. I've acquired a few, and decided to thin the herd somewhat.
I have several suitable straps for the 20mm lugs.
