This model represents a fascinating chapter in Citizen’s history, when the brand was experimenting with practical complications and making them accessible to a younger audience. The watch is powered by a hand-wound Citizen alarm movement (typically Cal. 9812 or 9810, 17 or 21 jewels), running at 18,000 bph. The alarm is fully mechanical and controlled via a two-crown layout: the crown at 4 o’clock winds and sets the time, while the crown at 2 o’clock winds, sets, and activates the alarm. Once triggered, the alarm rings for approximately 13–16 seconds, delivering a surprisingly lively buzz for a watch of this size. The stainless steel case measures approximately 36mm, giving it strong wrist presence while remaining very wearable. Many examples are marked “Parawater”, Citizen’s early designation for water-resistant cases, adding to the charm and practicality of the watch for its era. The design is distinctly late-60s/early-70s, with a functional layout that clearly reflects its purpose. Originally positioned as an affordable, everyday alarm watch, the Citizen College Alarm has become highly collectible today due to its mechanical complexity, short production window, and unmistakable design. Mechanical alarm watches from Japan are uncommon, and this model stands out as one of Citizen’s most interesting executions of the complication. The watch is in great original condition showing minor hairline scratches on the case and the caseback fitting for its age. The crystal is clean, dial is clean and in good condition.
