Hey WatchEx, up for sale today is a Grand Seiko 61GS, reference 6145-8000. What makes this particular versus more rare is it’s gold cap. Make no mistake — this is *not* “gold plating”, “vermeil”, or anything of the sort. It has a solid gold (I’m guessing 14K based on the color) “shell” that wraps around the front and sides of the case. What you get is a gold watch that will never tarnish, flake or peel like gold plating would. This watch is a gorgeous piece of Grand Seiko history. It was designed by Taro Tanaka, creator of Grand Seiko’s “grammar of design”. The flat, sharply angled edges make for some truly stunning light play on the wrist. In my opinion, while the 44GS is a great watch, the 61GS is the culmination of everything Grand Seiko had learned, refined into one of the most beautiful case profiles Grand Seiko has ever designed. Despite owning other Grand Seikos, the case of the 61GS is far and away my favorite case shape. It runs flawlessly, landing at -14spd last I measured, though I’m sure a servicing could get it timed like a top. The winding system feels great and operates even better, the 32,000 bph glides effortlessly across the dial without stuttering, and the date wheel makes a deep and satisfying snap as expected at midnight and when changed manually via the crown. It’s difficult to find a vintage watch in this condition that runs this well, especially a piece with the history and prestige like the 61GS.
