# 1957 IWC Platinum cal. 852 Video: [https://youtube.com/shorts/5JAP\_H9wotE?feature=share](https://youtube.com/shorts/5JAP_H9wotE?feature=share) Selling this beautiful vintage IWC piece with solid platinum case and caliber 852 automatic movement. The interesting thing about the case, other than platinum being the rarest precious metal used in watches, is that during this time period import duties were very high on platinum. So IWC contracted with their distributor in Japan, Isomura, to manufacture the case and shipped the incomplete watches to Japan for final assembly as Japanese domestic market (JDM) watches. These watches are denoted with a small Japanese flag on the inside of the caseback. This piece is driven by the caliber 852 movement, which was made from 1952-1958 and limited to a total of about 13,000 units across all models before being succeeded by the much high production caliber 853 series. Like all IWC automatic movements, the caliber 852 utilizes the innovative and efficient Pellaton winding system, which gives the watch great shock protection compared to other pieces from the era. Movement is in very good running condition and winds and sets smoothly. Serial dates it to 1957. This model is the heaviest vintage platinum IWC that I have come across, with its thick case and heavy caseback as well as the platinum and iridium alloy. The case measures 35mm but the dial is large and the thickness with the crystal is 12.1mm so it wears fairly large. The lug to lug is 42.5mm, and lug width is 18mm.
