This Universal Geneve Polerouter is a gorgeous piece of horological history. Designed by Gerald Genta, one of the most influential watch designers ever, and the man behind some of the most iconic timepieces in existence, including the Patek Philippe Nautilus and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. Its name "Polerouter" reflects its connection to aviation, it was made for the first flight over the North Pole, as it was created to commemorate Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) flights' polar routes. Universal Genève SA was one of the most recognized watch companies in both Europe and the U.S. in the post-war era, mostly recognized for their chronograph models. But after Universal Genève settled a patent dispute regarding the micro-rotor caliber of movement, they released what would become their most popular watch – the Polerouter. Universal Genève debuted the Polerouter in 1954. The manufacturer was in partnership with Scadinavian Airline System (SAS) to develop an automatic watch to be more resistance to the magnetism of the North and South poles. This example is fitted with the original bumper-style movement before Universal Genève introduced the caliber 215 with a micro-rotor. This example features a handsome, glossy black crosshair dial and silvered outer track, giving it a very sophisticated appearance. The lyre lugs on the Polerouter are reminiscent of the lugs on the Omega Speedmaster, giving this time-only watch a bit of a sportier look. The Polerouter is a prime example of how Universal Genève produced some great time-only watches besides the more discussed chronographs.
