The Patek features a polished yellow gold case, which is accented by a fixed “Clous de Paris” hobnail bezel. The Calatrava is mounted on its original black alligator strap, which is secured by its original polished yellow gold tang buckle. The Calatrava features a white dial with painted black Roman numeral hour markers, nickel blackened 18 karat white gold  hands, and a sub seconds register at 6 o’clock. The movement used in the 3919J is the manual wind Patek Philippe Geneva Seal Caliber 215 PS, which features approximately 44 hours of power reserve, and is running flawlessly.

The unpolished case has been preserved well with the only signs of previous wear being some faint surface level hairline scratches on its high polish accents, and some light marks on the 9 o'clock side of the case near the notch to open the case. The alligator strap contains signs of previous wear, but has some use life left. The dial does contain some faint imperfections in the form of minor dust particles on its surface, which are only visible with a magnifying loupe. Overall the Patek is in very good condition, and a wonderful example of a 3919J, which has a fascinating and previously untold provenance, which I couldn't be happier to being to light !

Story Behind The Provenance:

What truly sets this 3919 from the rest is its caseback engraving, which reads:

“Thanks For a Great Run Dick Jacobs Cleveland Indians February 2000”

For those who don't know, Richard “Dick” Jabobs was an Ohio businessman who owned the Cleveland Indians from 1986, until he agreed to sell the team in 1999. Mr Jacobs is known as being the most successful owner in the team’s history, and is credited with turning the team around under his ownership and building them into what they are today. However, while Mr Jacobs may have agreed to sell the team in 1999, the deal didn't actually close until February of 2000. An MLB executive who received an identical watch from Mr Jacobs, was kind enough to give the backstory surrounding the presentation of these watches to their lucky recipients.

Upon the completion of his last day as owner of the team in February of 2000, Mr Jacobs decided to take the executive front office staff, and the team’s board of directors out to dinner. The restaurant of choice was Johnny's Downtown in Cleveland, and little did those in attendance know what Mr Jacobs had in store for them. Upon the completion of his “farewell dinner”, Mr Jacobs presented each person at the dinner with identical 3919J Calatravas, which all featured the same engraving as a “farewell gift”. While it is somewhat common to hear about other watches being given out to commemorate a special occasion, Mr Jacobs must have truly been a man with refined taste, to choose to give the 12 to 15 people in attendance 3919J Calatravas, as his “farewell gift”.
