In the pantheon of Datejusts, some are more collectable than others.  In the 1600, 1601, and 1603 series, the more sight after models include Ghost Dials, Sigma Dials, Buckley Dials, and Wide-Boy Dials.  This listing is for the venerable Rolex 1603 “Wide Boy” Datejust.  Nicknamed the “Wide Boy” due to the straight (non-tapered) hands and matching wide indices.  This is one of the more desirable and collectable Datejusts of the era due to this rare configuration. Made predominantly in the silver dial configuration seen here, there were more limited “Wide Boy” variations in blue, black, & dark gray as well as champagne in the 2-tone version.  **Case:** The 36mm stainless Oyster case is in very nice condition for the age.  Stamped 1603 with the original correct engine turned stainless steel bezel.  There are some minor scuffs and scratches as seen in the pictures, but no significant dents/dings, etc.  I am assuming it has been polished at some point, but not during the recent service and there is still plenty of meat on the lugs with sharp angles.  20mm lug width, original crown. The acrylic crystal is new and the caseback and crown tube gaskets were replaced in Jan 2023 at the time of service.  The serial number dates this watch to ca.1970.    **Bracelet:** The original, period correct, OEM Rolex jubilee bracelet is still attached to the watch.  Stamped Rolex USA, this is not an aftermarket bracelet as seen on many watches of this era. (If a seller isn’t showing you the clasp on the bracelet - it is likely an aftermarket.)  The bracelet has some stretch as to be expected from a watch of this age and is serviceable to have the stretch removed if the buyer desires.  It includes several removable links and will fit a 7.25” wrist.  The watch also looks stunning on a strap. **Movement:** The 1035 non-quickset movement is in excellent condition and is shown in the photos.  As you can see, the coated wheels are not worn through, the plating is excellent and the movement is exceptionally clean for its age.  The movement was serviced by a professional watchmaker in January 2023 and is running very strong with no replacement parts needed. It winds and sets smoothly as it should with the date wheel clicking over precisely at 12:00. Cell phone timegrapher app pictures are shown at -1 sec/day and 0.3ms beat error - outstanding for a 50+ year old watch. Has not been worn since service - only occasionally on the winder to keep the oils moving.. **Dial / Hands:** The condition of this dial is what really makes it special.  The 16XX series was the last generation of Rolex to feature the pie pan dial with a downward sloping edge at the rehaut and this really gives it that vintage feel, similar to the Omega Constellations of the same era.  The dial and hands are original to the watch and have their factory Tritium lume on them.  All original factory lume plots on the dial are present (which is rare if you look closely at other examples). The lume plots have a nice bulbous quality and a beautiful golden patina.  The lume on the hands is not cracked or chipped and the hands are in great shape with similar golden lume coloration.  No dark spots on the hands, markers, or dial.  The dial finish exhibits the absolute minimum signs of age and shows wonderfully.  In the right light it takes on a slightly golden hue and is absolutely stunning.  This is what vintage collecting is all about. **What is included:** This listing includes the watch on the original bracelet, service records and spare parts/envelope from the service. I am also including the additional straps, travel box, and springbar tool shown in the pictures. Interest in dress watches has increased across the board with recent reporting on this trend from Quill & Pad, Hodinkee, Time & Tide, Robb Report, Chrono24 and many others.  As a result, the Datejust market is starting to lift.  With vintage Rolex sports models going through the roof and pricing out most collectors, the Datejust is currently an affordable classic with arguably many more interesting variations available to collectors within its historical range.  The market seems to be waking back up again and I would predict further price appreciation in this segment over the next few years and this watch should see additional uptick due to its rare & desirable attributes. There were likely hundreds of thousands of silver dialed 16XX Datejusts produced, but only a very small fraction of those were done in the “Wide Boy” configuration, making this one much more unique and collectable.  You may find other examples of this watch out there, but you will not find one with the original configuration in better condition with a fresh service history.  We considered holding this one and letting it appreciate while the next wave hits, but this one needs to be seen and worn. It’s not getting the wrist time that it deserves.  Overall, this watch is a real stunner and a great runner.  It is ready to go home with a collector that appreciates its value, rarity, and beauty. Asking $3,800 USD + label. Price is FIRM at this level and well below market.  (If this was on A+S, Vision Vintage or “The Dink” they would be asking $5500 +).  Paypal F&F or Zelle only.  Not interested in any trades at this time. I have excellent feedback here on these forums from previous Rolex and other high-end transactions.  Happy to talk in person/on the phone as well.
